In January 2014, the GED test changed significantly from its previous version. You can read about the changes here.  


What is the GED test like?

The GED consists of four subjects:

  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Reasoning Through Language Arts
  • Science
  • Social Studies

How is the GED test given?

As of January 2014, all GED testing is computer based (you must go to a designated testing site to take the computer-based test).

You will need the following computer skills:

  • Mouse skills (click, double-click, drag-and-drop)
  • Keyboard and typing skills to type answers
  • Copy and paste
  • Use a scroll bar
  • Undo/redo edits
  • Use an online calculator

How much does the GED test cost?

You can expect to pay around $120-$150 for the GED test.

How can I prepare for the GED test?

 Study on your own:

  • Books: Search the library catalog for study books (we also have books available for purchase at the service desk).
  • Online: Use our Testing and Education Reference Center Database or Learning Express Library, both of which offer online practice tests and online books (requires Mesa Public Library card and PIN to access). The GED Testing Service site also offers free online GED practice tests for each subject
  • Computer tutorials:  the computer tutorials listed above will help you prepare for the computer-based GED test.

Take classes:

  • In-person (face-to-face) preparation classes (see list below)
  • Online (distance learning) preparation classes (see list below)

Mesa Counts on College
Mesa Counts on College will cover the cost for eligible students , which includes test prep, materials, tutoring and the test. Classes typically run for for 12 weeks.
