Mental Health Awareness Month (also referred to as "Mental Health Month") has been observed in May in the United States since 1949. It was started by the Mental Health America (MHA) organization (then known as the National Association for Mental Health) to bring awareness to the importance of mental health. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.1
