Native American Heritage Month at Mesa Public Library

Post Date:11/01/2025 7:00 AM

Land Acknowledgment

The City of Mesa acknowledges that we gather on the homeland of the Native people and their ancestors, who have inhabited this landscape from time immemorial to the present day. The landscape is sacred and reflects cultural values central to the O’Odham (known as the Pima) and the Piipaash (known as the Maricopa) way of life and their self-definition. This acknowledgment demonstrates our commitment to work in partnership with Ancestral Indigenous Communities to foster understanding, appreciation, and respect for this heritage.

During Native American Heritage Month, Mesa Public Library celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Native peoples. This month invites us to learn from the stories, voices, and traditions that have shaped our community and the land we share. It is a time to honor the strength and creativity of Indigenous communities whose heritage continues to inspire and educate us.

Mesa Public Library offers a wide range of resources to help patrons explore and connect with Native American history and culture. Visitors can visit the Mesa Room (by appointment) to discover local historical collections, photographs, and documents that reflect the deep connections between this region and its Indigenous peoples. Our Culture Pass program opens doors to museums and cultural sites that highlight Native American heritage, allowing the community to experience history and art firsthand.

Readers will also find a diverse selection of fiction by Native American authors whose stories capture aspects of Indigenous experiences. Our nonfiction collection includes powerful works that document Native history, language, and contemporary life, helping to broaden understanding and appreciation for these communities. Additionally, our digital collections offer access to music and storytelling that celebrate Native voices through sound and song. Patrons can also explore Kanopy’s thoughtfully curated film playlist highlighting Native American history, art, and contemporary life.

We invite everyone to explore these resources throughout November and beyond. By learning from the past and celebrating the living cultures of Native peoples, we strengthen our shared commitment to respect, inclusion, and understanding. Mesa Public Library is proud to be a place where heritage, knowledge, and community come together.
