What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Interlibrary Loan service is a free service offered to you by the Mesa Public Library. We borrow books, videos, and audiobooks from other libraries that you need but that we do not own. We also can try to obtain photocopies of magazine, journal and newspaper articles from periodicals that we do not own.

E-mail: ill.info@mesaaz.gov

Who is eligible to use this service?

Interlibrary Loan is available to any patron with a current Mesa Public Library card who is in good standing with the Library.

How do I submit requests?

Please use our online request form.

Please tell us as much information as you know about the item you would like for us to borrow. Do not abbreviate titles. Before submitting a request, make certain that item is not available at any Mesa Public Library branch. There is a limit of six active requests per patron at one time. This includes pending requests.

How long does it take to get a book or article?

We process your requests as quickly as possible. We borrow from libraries all over the U.S. and in Canada. It can take from a few days to a few weeks for us to receive the materials. Most materials are sent via the Maricopa County Library Courier or the U.S. Post Office.

Are there types of library material that cannot be borrowed?

The following materials are generally not available through Interlibrary Loan, and we are unable to request them or provide them for other libraries:

  • Music CDs
  • Rare books
  • Popular items, or books/audiovisual materials that are in demand
  • Newspapers and manuscripts (unless available in microform)
  • Entire issues of periodicals
  • Reference books or special items that libraries do not loan

How long are the loan periods?

On an average, the loan period is 3 weeks. It can be shorter or longer, depending on the rules set by the library that lends the material to us.

What about fines?

Overdue fines are $1.00 per title per day. If an Interlibrary loan is requested for you, and you do not pick it up, a 50¢ fee will be added to your account. Please call the Interlibrary loan office if you no longer need your request.

How will I be notified when my material arrives?

The Library’s computer will call you or send an email message when your material is available for you to pick up. If we cannot contact you either of these two ways, we will send you a notice in the mail.

Where do I pick up and return my books?

You may select the Mesa Public Library branch most convenient for you to pick up your materials. You must return your materials to the Circulation Desk at any Mesa Public Library branch. Please do not remove the attached label from the materials borrowed - it is needed to clear your account. Photocopy requests are mailed to the address on your library account.

May I renew interlibrary loaned materials?

Interlibrary loan materials may not be renewed, and due dates may not be extended. Due dates are firm.
