Archives

The Mesa Room Local History Archives contain primary and secondary research materials, documenting Mesa's history from before its founding in 1878 to the recent past. The collections are made up of one or many of the following materials: papers, documents, letters, diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, audio/visual material, maps, posters, newspapers, pamphlets, and ephemera. 

The archival holdings of the Mesa Room consist of manuscript (personal papers) and organizational/institutional (records) collections. Manuscript collections consist of personal papers of individual Mesans, as well as, family histories and biographies. Highlights of which include:

  • The Bertha Kleinman Papers, poetry and correspondence of a renown Mesan poet
  • Copy of the 19th century diary of George Passey, third mayor of Mesa 
  • O.S. Stapley Papers, prominent early 20th century Mesa businessman 
  • Earl W. Merrill Collection, Mesa historian

Organizational/institutional collections consist of records from cultural, civic and religious organizations, as well as, local businesses and government. 

Highlights of which include:

  • The Mesa Little Theatre Collection, Mesa Kiwanis Club Records,Mesa Arts League Collection
  • Mesa Chamber of Commerce Records, Mesa Junior Chamber of Commerce Collection
  • Better Community Council of Mesa, Velda Rose Methodist Church
  • Falcon Field Collection, Williams Airforce Base Collection
  • City of Mesa Resolutions & Ordinances, Mayoral Records 
  • City Manager's Office-Marketing and Communications Photo Collection, Parks-Recreation-Cultural Programs and Photo Records, Public Works-Engineering Records, Mesa Public Library Records
