Federal Legal Publications - What Are They? (PDF 119 KB)
Guide describes many government publications featuring congressional proceedings, laws, rules, notices, regulations, and codes. All are held in print at the Main Branch, and most can be found online. The guide details their coverage and directs to online access.

USA.Gov Information portal for the federal government. Can conduct many government transactions and search by topic, federal agency, or keyword. See Public Safety and Law category for law-related information.

Laws / Legislation

THOMAS Thomas contains several databases and should be used when doing research on current legislation. Committee information, Congressional Record, and Historical Documents are also available along with current House and Senate directories. This source is highly recommended to use as a starting point for researching federal legislation information.

US Code The US Code contains the general and permanent Federal laws of the United States. This database should be used when finding current laws and amendments that are currently in effect.

Rules and Regulations

Federal Register This source contains regulations (for regulatory and non-regulatory agencies,) proposed regulations, announcements regarding agency actions, Presidential proclamations and Executive Orders, notices of hearings, and grant announcements. The Federal Register is issued on a daily basis. All US Government agency rules and regulations will first appear in the Federal Register. The Federal Register is used to update the Code of Federal Regulations. Please see a Librarian for further explanation.

Code of Federal Regulations The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is a codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register. This database should be used when researching current regulations. Please note that the CFR is issued annually. Therefore, one must use the LSA (List of CFR Sections Affected) and the Federal Register to obtain current up-to-date information. Please see a Librarian for further explanation.

Case Law And Courts

Federal Research Resources This site hosted by Georgetown University Law Library provides a host of links to various circuits within the Federal judiciary system. A map outlining the circuits is provided.

Historical Supreme Court Decisions Supreme Court Decisions from 1937 -1975 are available from volumes 300 through 422 of the US Reports. This database is searchable by case and keyword.

United States Bankruptcy Court, District of Arizona This site provides information about filing for bankruptcy. It includes downloads for general forms and instructions, local rules, case filings, and information on where to file.

Supreme Court Collection The US Supreme Court is the highest court in the US judicial system. This site makes available US Supreme Court decisions from May 1990 to present under the auspices of Project Hermes.

U.S. Courts This is a good starting point for those unclear about the U.S. courts system. Includes information on the Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals, U.S. District Courts and U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

ALIS- Arizona Legislative Information Service This all-in-one site contains Arizona Statutes, session laws, and bills introduced to the current legislative session. The Arizona Constitution, budget, and profiles of the State's legislature are also found here.

Arizona Residential LandLord and Tenant Act The Secretary of State's office provides the full-text of this important law on its website. View online or download as an Adobe Acrobat file.

Arizona Administrative Register Issued from the Secretary of State, this source includes the Governor's Executive Orders and Proclamations, Notices of proposed rules, Digests of the Attorney General opinions, State Boards and Commissioners and more.

Arizona Supreme Court and Court of Appeals This link to the Arizona Judicial Department provides Rules of the Court, as well as links to recent decisions of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, Division 1 and 2.

Superior Court of Arizona in Maricopa County Provides access to more than 20 million Superior Court case records dating back to 1987. Biographical information on judges, links to court departments, and much more available.

City of Mesa

City of Mesa Code Book Contains Mesa's ordinances and amendments adopted by the City. Mesa City Charter is also included.

City of Mesa Municipal Court Mesa Municipal Court has jurisdiction to hear violations of City ordinances, misdemeanor violations of state laws, and civil traffic violations.
