Community Partnership brings cardboard boat regatta in Mesa
- Lead Mesa Library is hosting a cardboard boat regatta at Freemont Pool, 1101 N. Power Rd. on April 30 from 8 am - 3 pm.
Mesa Public Library, including THINKspot, has formed a partnership with Fremont Junior High School, City of Mesa Parks and Recreation, and Engineering Department to bring a cardboard boat regatta to Mesa.
The regatta will be held on Sat., April 30 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fremont Aquatic Complex, 1101 N. Power Rd. This is a free event and the public is encouraged to attend. Races will begin at noon.
“We are excited to host this event and challenge our students to take what they’ve learned in STEAM Club and apply it,” Mesa Librarian Melissa McCallister said. “The students will be working with volunteers from Mesa’s Engineering department, and racing their boats in the pool.”
The race will be a competition between 7th and 8th grade students involved with the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Club at Fremont Junior High. Students will demonstrate their understanding of scientific principles, like density and buoyancy, while having a fun, friendly battle of the boats.
An awards ceremony will follow the races for First Place, Team Spirit, Aesthetics, and the Titanic Award (for the team whose boat sinks the fastest). It’s all in good fun.
